Chapter Sixteen:
Amore
âThere is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness.â
Nietzsche
Eleonore heard the front door to the house open as she sat on the bed in their bedroom, drawing and designing dresses. She knew that it was Ben and his dad returning, but she was so fixated on the project in front of her that she remained where she was. She wanted to design something that would honor those she had lost in Auschwitz. She wanted to stray slightly from her regular designs and create something strong that reminded her of Ruth and Ella yet intertwined with the softness of Alex and the fortitude of Em. It was a challenging task, yet one that carried a noble purpose, and Eleonore was determined in her mission.
The floor creaked near the room, and the door opened as Eleonore assumed that Ben had walked in, though she couldnât pry her eyes away from the sketch in front of her.
âI was wondering when youâd be back,â Eleonore spoke slowly to Ben, as most of her critical faculties were focused entirely on her project.
âBen?â Eleonore looked up at him when he didnât reply to see that he was sullen and appeared as though a dear friend had passed away.
âWhatâs wrong?!â Eleonore put aside the drawing and rushed over to Ben.
âWe found it.â Ben abandoned his brooding pretense as he grew a cheeky grin.
âFound what?!â Eleonore returned the grin, but wasnât sure if she should jump to any conclusions without hearing him out first.
âThe perfect spot.â Ben began to laugh as the stench of alcohol poured off of his breath.
âYou did?!â Eleonore stood back and covered her nose.
âI did.â Ben gave a slightly drunken bounce of his head.
âAlready?! Where is it? How much? Details Ben! Spill it already!â Eleonore slapped his arm, though she still maintained her distance due to his smell.
âIâll take you there tomorrow.â Ben put his hands on her shoulders as he looked at her with the tenderest of expressions.
âWhat is it?â Eleonore asked softly as her breathing began to labor.
âIâm so glad that youâre mine.â Ben ran his finger across her lips, which sent tremors down her spine, and Eleonore looked up at him while suddenly unable to speak or even breathe.
Then, leaning in, Ben pressed his lips against hers. Closing her eyes, Eleonore pulled him in closer as she felt his body touching hers, not caring any longer about his horrid breath or inebriated state. Losing himself to passion, Ben grabbed her face with his hands and kissed her deeply and longingly. Pushing her gently back to the bed, Ben began removing his jacket and unbuttoning his shirt while still kissing her as Eleonore began undoing her dress.
Eventually, the two of them were down to their undergarments and Eleonore took a deep breath as she stared into his eyes. The last time that they had attempted to be intimate, Rudolph had appeared, and Eleonore wondered if she could forget that past or if it would forever destroy her chance at intimacy.
